Once the holidays roll around, everyone begins to look forward to their favorite festive foods. From turkey to mashed potatoes to pumpkin pie, traditional treats are plentiful. Cranberries are another common holiday food that makes an appearance. If you love this vibrant berry, you’ll be glad to know they are also beneficial for your oral health! Keep reading to learn three ways they contribute to a healthy smile.

How Does Cranberry Sauce Benefit Your Oral Health?

This bright red berry is widely considered to be a superfood due to its high nutrient and antioxidant content. The nutrients in cranberries have been shown to lower risks of urinary tract infections, prevent cancer, improve the immune system, and lower blood pressure!

But how do they contribute to a healthier smile? The three ways they benefit your oral health are:

  1. They contain a nutrient known as proanthocyanidins. This chemical compound protects your gums from harmful enzymes and has anti-inflammatory properties.
  2. They can lower the amount of plaque in your mouth, which decreases your risk of tooth decay. Studies have shown that drinking cranberry juice can reduce its presence by 95%! Cranberries contain a special enzyme that keeps bacteria from binding to your teeth, which then protects you from the plaque that causes cavities.
  3. They reduce the risk of developing gum disease, which can lead to tooth loss. Once again, that pesky bad bacteria can infect the tissue surrounding your pearly whites. The powerful nutrients in cranberries decrease the bacteria, as well as cut down the amino acids that bacteria survive on.

Tips for Enjoying Cranberries During the Holidays

Now that you know all about the amazing benefits cranberries offer your dental health, you can smile happily as you indulge in your favorite cranberry treats. From sauces to drinks to breads, this nourishing fruit can be enjoyed in a variety of ways during the holidays. Be mindful of these tips to maximize their oral health benefits:

  • Be mindful of sugar content— While fresh cranberries are full of nutrients that protect your teeth and gums, sugar is often added to common treats containing this fruit, which can increase the risk for tooth decay. Canned cranberry sauce is often artificially sweetened. You can always make homemade sauce, as well as other cranberry treats, to control the amount of sugar.
  • Keep your teeth free from staining— This darkly-pigmented berry has the potential to stain your pearly whites. Rinse your mouth after eating foods containing cranberries to keep them from sticking to and staining your teeth.
  • Maintain oral hygiene routine— Despite how busy the holidays can be, it is important to stick to a consistent dental routine. Brushing twice a day for at least two minutes a day and flossing daily will keep your teeth healthy throughout the festivities.

It’s the time of the year to celebrate all the things that are wonderful about the holidays, including cranberries. Be mindful of your tips as you enjoy all the benefits from them that keep your smile healthy!
