Clear aligners have made orthodontic treatment more convenient and discreet than ever. Systems like Invisalign allow patients to straighten their teeth without traditional brackets and wires. However, achieving the best results requires commitment and proper care. Following a few important dos and don’ts can help keep your treatment on track and your smile progressing as planned.

DO Wear Your Aligners as Directed

Consistency is the key to successful Invisalign treatment. Most patients are instructed to wear their aligners for 20 to 22 hours per day. Removing them too often or leaving them out for extended periods can slow tooth movement and delay results.

Only remove your aligners when eating, drinking anything other than water, or cleaning your teeth. The more faithfully you follow your wear schedule, the smoother your treatment will be.

DO Keep Your Aligners Clean

Aligners sit directly against your teeth for most of the day, so keeping them clean is essential. Rinse them every time you remove them and gently brush them using a soft toothbrush and clear, mild soap or aligner cleaner.

Avoid using toothpaste, which can be abrasive and cause cloudiness. Clean aligners help prevent odor, bacteria buildup, and staining.

DO Practice Excellent Oral Hygiene

Always brush and floss before putting your aligners back in. Trapping food particles or sugar between your teeth and aligners increases the risk of cavities and gum irritation.

Carrying a travel toothbrush or floss picks can make it easier to maintain good habits when you’re away from home.

DON’T Eat or Drink with Aligners In

Eating while wearing aligners can damage or warp them. Hot beverages like coffee or tea may also distort the plastic material. Additionally, sugary or colored drinks can become trapped inside the trays, increasing your risk of staining and tooth decay.

Remove your aligners before meals and snacks and rinse your mouth before reinserting them whenever possible.

DON’T Skip Aligner Changes or Appointments

Each set of aligners is designed to gradually move your teeth into position. Switching trays too early—or too late—can interfere with treatment progress. Follow your dentist’s or orthodontist’s instructions carefully regarding when to change aligners.

Regular check-ins ensure your teeth are moving correctly and allow adjustments if needed.

DON’T Leave Aligners Exposed

When not in use, always store your aligners in their protective case. Leaving them on a napkin or countertop increases the chance of loss, damage, or accidental disposal. Exposure to heat or bacteria can also compromise their effectiveness.

Invisalign offers flexibility and convenience, but success depends on patient cooperation. By wearing your aligners consistently, maintaining excellent hygiene, and avoiding common mistakes, you can achieve a straighter, healthier smile as efficiently as possible.
